Selma Powell: New Faculty Profile

Selma Powell joined the UW College of Education in September as director of the Special Education Teacher Preparation Program. Powell previously served as project director for the Resident Teacher Professional Preparation Program at the University of Central Florida. She earned her PhD at UCF, writing her dissertation on developmentally appropriate use of mathematics applications for tablets in early childhood classrooms.

UW College of Education students La’akea Yoshida and Christina Black dreamed of doing a world of good as educators. “My entire life, I have wanted to make a difference in the classroom,” says Christina, a recent master’s in teaching graduate and recipient of the Daniel V. Iyall Student Support Fund. Her Alaska Native grandfather never had the opportunity to attend college, nor her mother, who raised Christina and her siblings as a single parent.

Elham Kazemi, Geda and Phil Condit Professor in Science & Math Education, has received the Washington Educational Research Association's 2014 Distinguished Paper Award for a paper describing the University of Washington College of Education's innovative work in math education at Renton's Lakeridge Elementary School.

This past summer, the UW Master's in Instructional Leadership student found herself in yet another leadership position as she traveled to New York and joined 12 other teachers from around the world for Performance at the Center.

Doctoral students to present research

Sixteen of the University of Washington College of Education's doctoral students will discuss their research projects on Nov. 7, with topics ranging from designing community in online collaborative spaces for K-12 students to the measurement of teachers' sense of self-efficacy to how elementary teachers can facilitate productive science talk.

The Research and Inquiry Presentations, a major milestone in each Ph.D. candidate's studies at the College of Education, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Miller Hall Rooms 212 and 104. They are free and open to the public.

Schools gather at UW to build P-3 education efforts

Most children in the United States grow up in communities where concern for their education doesn't start until they enter the K-12 school system. Yet by that time, a vast amount of mental development has already taken place.

That's the motivating factor behind the National P-3 Institute being hosted by the University of Washington College of Education Oct. 27-30. Fifteen school systems from every corner of the country will gather to begin improving and integrating the education children receive from birth through their elementary school years.
