Position Description
Learning Goals: He is a capable reader but relies heavily on sight-word guessing. We are specifically looking for a tutor with a strong grasp of phonics and decoding to help him learn how to slow down and "solve" unfamiliar words. We would also like to incorporate writing practice—especially spelling the sight words he already knows—and help him build confidence so he sees reading as a fun, empowering activity.
Student Profile & Teaching Style: Our son has ADHD and a bit of a "race car brain." The ideal tutor will understand how to support neurodivergent learners by naturally mixing in fun, physical brain breaks to keep him engaged. At the same time, he needs an educator who is firm and consistent with rules and boundaries, and who is not easily swayed during negotiations.
Schedule: We are looking for in-home sessions (roughly 45–60 minutes each) during the following windows:
- June 22–26: Availability between 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM
- July 2 & 3: Completely flexible (any time works)
- August (all weeks): Availability between 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Environment: Our home is near Roosevelt Highschool, which is a very short commute (bus or bike) from the UW campus. Please note that we have a very friendly dog (Hobie Brown) in the house, so comfort with pets is a must. Happy to meet somewhere nearby as well.
