Joe Lott
Associate Professor of Education
Professor Lott studies racial identity development and civic engagement among Black college students, the impact of college experience on civic and political dispositions, and how to change the culture of going to college through parent-school-community partnerships. His research interests include using university-community partnerships to foster wellness and educational achievement among males of color throughout school systems. He shares his wealth of knowledge through teaching classes on applied statistics, civic engagement in higher education, school-community partnerships, sociology of education and student development.
Professor Lott is founding director of the UW’s Brotherhood Initiative, a program dedicated to empowering undergraduate males of color to thrive on campus and graduate prepared for a lifetime of leadership, service and success. He also serves as director for the Leadership in Higher Education master’s program and as co-principal investigator on the Equitable Parent-School Collaboration Research project.
He is co-editor of the book “Multilevel Modeling: Techniques and Applications in Institutional Research” and his articles include “Reinforcing Deficit, Journeying Toward Equity Cultural Brokering in Family Engagement Initiatives” in the American Educational Research Journal and “Black students in college and civic engagement: academic and social influences” in College Student Affairs Journal.
