On June 9, 2026, the University of Washington College of Education came together to celebrate the Class of 2026 in a joyful and inspiring graduation ceremony led by Dean Mia Tuan. The event honored more than 700 graduates marking a significant milestone for a class defined by perseverance, purpose, and a deep commitment to serving others.

Dean Tuan opened the celebration by reflecting on the many paths graduates took to reach this moment. From educators and researchers to counselors, policymakers, and advocates, each graduate brought their own journey of resilience and determination. Her remarks centered on the powerful idea of “solving for x”—a theme that captured the challenges, questions, and aspirations that shape both personal growth and professional purpose. She reminded graduates that while life rarely offers a single solution, their experiences have prepared them to help others navigate uncertainty, ask meaningful questions, and discover new possibilities.

The ceremony featured a compelling keynote address from Roxana Norouzi, UW alumna and Executive Director of OneAmerica. Norouzi delivered an inspiring message on leadership, community power, and creating meaningful change for immigrant and refugee communities. Her remarks celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and encouraged graduates to use their voices and skills to help build a more just and inclusive world.

Graduates also heard from two of their peers. Zain Suleman, who earned his Master in Teaching in Elementary Teacher Education, shared a heartfelt reflection shaped by his multicultural upbringing on Seattle’s Eastside. He spoke about the power of education to connect communities and urged fellow graduates to lead with kindness, curiosity, and compassion.

Nadir Abdul-Salaam, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Early Care and Education, offered an inspiring perspective as a husband, father of three, working professional, and nontraditional student. His remarks highlighted the importance of perseverance and dedication, reminding graduates that there are many paths to success in education.

Surrounded by the support of families, friends, mentors, faculty, and staff, the Class of 2026 celebrated not only their achievements but also the impact they are poised to make in communities across Washington and beyond. As Dean Tuan emphasized, the world needs individuals who are willing to engage complex challenges, seek solutions, and remain committed to expanding opportunity for others—and this class is ready.
